The main benefits of a kidney transplant

  • The transplant can take place on a predetermined date, which provides optimal conditions for both donor and recipient.
  • The outcome of the transplant is much more positive, and the grafted kidney will have a longer lifespan, if the graft takes place before the recipient has to undergo dialysis.
  • Given that the living donor has been assessed and is therefore in excellent health, and that the transplant was performed in optimal conditions, the lifespan of a graft from a living donor is longer than one from a deceased donor.
  • Given that the time that elapses between the retrieval of the donor’s kidney and its transplant into the recipient is kept as short as possible, fewer complications tend to occur immediately following surgery and the graft usually begins functioning right away, which is not always the case with deceased-donor kidneys.
